Dixie Hummingbirds

Kauai's The Power of Music series presents the legendary Gospel singing group The Dixie Hummingbirds in their only Kauai appearance Thursday, November 16, 7PM at Church of the Pacific in Princeville. Advance tickets are available by emailing info@steelgrass.org, or by calling (808) 821-1857.

A pioneering force behind the evolution of the modern gospel quartet sound, The Dixie Hummingbirds are among the longest-lived and most successful groups of their era. Renowned for their imaginative arrangements, progressive harmonies and all-around versatility, they have earned universal recognition as the greatest Southern quartet of their generation. Their influence has spread throughout the world of spiritual music, and has also inspired secular artists ranging from Jackie Wilson to Bobby "Blue" Bland to The Temptations.

The six-man ensemble passed the 70 year mark several years ago, and continues a tradition as one of the greatest Gospel groups of all time. Ira Tucker still provides the high-powered lead that made him one of the icons of Gospel music. He is backed up by longtime all-star members Paul Owens, Carl Davis, Gregory Carroll and the newest member, William Bright.

Gospel is one of the key influences in the development of many American popular music styles, including the Blues, Rock and Roll, Folk, Jazz and even Hip Hop. As one of the longest-running Gospel groups in the country, the Dixie Hummingbirds are being celebrated in a documentary film on the group, currently in production by award-winning Producer-Director Jeff Scheftel. Jeff is bringing his crew to the Island to film the Hummingbirds performing, recording, and talking about their music, all with Kauai as background.
